Will there ever be another super sportscar as visceral and honed as the Dodge Viper? Highly unlikely. The final ‘VX I’ generation of the Viper was conceived and built during a wonderful time in automotive history as the intersection of ‘old school’ nicely overlapped with ‘new school’. The Viper has come to represent the best of modern technology, engineering, and dynamics with the approachability and straight-forwardness of the not so distant past. This 2013 SRT Viper, fittingly sporting a Venom Black exterior with Rattler Wheels, is a remarkable example and has plenty of life left to enjoy between it and its new owner.
The 8.4-liter V10 puts out a gargantuan 640 bhp and 813 Nm of torque. This tower of power is properly involving as it is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual Tremec transmission. The transmission is right between the engine and the driver too, so there is a truly direct feel as you row through the gears. The 0 – 100 km/h run is reliably done in less than four seconds, and the top speed is in excess of 330 km/h. One of the most unique and enduring aspects of the Viper has been its engine, as it is one of the few high-performance road cars to utilize a V10 powerplant. Interestingly, Lamborghini had a significant hand in developing the original Viper engine as it and Dodge were under the same ownership at the time. Improvements and refinements to the Viper’s engine have naturally occurred since, but it is interesting to highlight the faint relation of Dodge’s V10 super sportscar and Lamborghini’s V10 supercars that would arrive upon the turn of the century.
The styling of this 2013 SRT Viper clearly marks its lineage to preceding Vipers, but it updates the characteristic design cues to modern and brilliant effect. The curvaceous lines are pronounced but not overdone, the silhouette with the long hood and cab-rearward layout is timeless, and the cumulative details accentuate each surface without drawing too much attention from the overall car. Time will continue to be favorable to the design of this SRT Viper as it still looks as contemporary yet classic now as it did upon its release in 2013. The interior and its controls are refreshingly approachable. The touch screen is useful without distracting or dominating the interior’s space, the pedals extend and retract at the push of a button on the steering column, the mix of rotary dials makes for added ease when adjusting audio and climate control settings, and the steering wheel controls make customizing the instrument cluster personable without being overwhelming.
Options for this SRT Viper include Rattler Polished Wheels (18” Front, 19” Rear), Dual Side Sport Exhausts, Black Sabelt Leather Bucket Seats with 6-Way Manual Adjustability, 19-Speaker SRT High Performance Audi System, 900 Watt Amplifier, SRT Steering Wheel with Black Stitching, SRT Leather Shift Knob, Cruise Control with Steering Wheel Controls, Power Adjustable Sport Pedals, 8.4” Centre Touch Screen, Media Hub (SD, USB, Aux compatibility), SRT Performance Pages System, and Uconnect Voice Command with Bluetooth.
